Samsung ice makers that quit or freeze up

Many Samsung French-door models put the ice maker in the fresh-food section, inside its own cold compartment fed by a fan. Ice stops when that fan fails (40E), when the fill tube freezes because its heater died (33E), or when cold air escapes because the ice bucket isn't seated all the way. An expired water filter or low water pressure slows things down too. After a reset or a new filter, give it up to 24 hours.

One side warm, the other cold

With Twin Cooling Plus, the fridge has its own evaporator and fan. When the defrost system (heater, thermostat or sensor) fails, that evaporator frosts over and the air stops moving, so the fridge warms up while the freezer stays cold. Codes 22E and 5E are common here.

The reverse happens too. A warm freezer or frost on its back wall, along with 21E, typically means the freezer fan is frozen in ice from a gasket gap or a door left ajar. If it comes back after a defrost, the fan motor or defrost system needs work.

No cooling anywhere, or water where it shouldn't be

When nothing cools, 84C (compressor lock) and 83E (abnormal compressor current) point to the compressor or its inverter control. Sealed-system repairs need a technician.

For leaks or a dry dispenser, look at the water line behind the fridge for kinks and make sure the filter is fully seated. Water on the floor most likely comes from a dripping inlet valve or a cracked line.

Samsung refrigerator codes, translated

CodeWhat it usually means
33EIce maker fill pipe heater problem. The fill tube can freeze shut
39E, 39CIce maker function error
40E, 40CIce room fan problem
8E, 14EIce maker sensor problem
21EFreezer fan problem, frequently a fan frozen in ice after a door was left open or from a gasket gap
22E, 22CRefrigerator fan problem, frequently after a door was left open
5ERefrigerator defrost sensor problem
84CCompressor locked
83E, 85E, 86ECompressor power problem. Abnormal current, low voltage or a surge
OF OFNot an error. Cooling Off (display) mode is on

Codes vary by model. Write the code down first. Pulling the plug just to make it go away leaves a technician with less to go on, so Samsung only wants you to do it when its instructions call for it.

Quick fixes worth trying

  • Seeing OF OF? That's Cooling Off mode. Press the two upper buttons on the panel's left side together and keep holding until you hear a chime, which takes 5 to 8 seconds.
  • Set the freezer to 0°F or colder and don't cram it full.
  • Reseat the ice bucket and make sure Ice Off isn't lit.
  • Family Hub owners can pull up current and past codes on the screen under Apps, then Fridge Manager, Fridge Settings and Self Check.

The model label is near the top of the left inside wall of the fresh-food section, and some models have another one outside near the bottom left.

Closing up a Florida house for summer

Before you leave for the season, switch the ice maker off and shut the water supply to the fridge. A storm outage can leave a surge or brownout code (85E or 86E) behind. Samsung's fix is a one-minute power cut. A code that shows up again afterward means it's time to call for service.

Warranty and what's worth repairing

Samsung's warranty page lists five years of parts and labor on the sealed system and ten years of parts on the Digital Inverter Compressor. What's covered on yours depends on the model and the date you bought it. Ice makers, fans, sensors and defrost parts are generally worth repairing.

Samsung refrigerator repair FAQ

What goes wrong most often on Samsung refrigerators?

In our technicians' notes on 100 Samsung refrigerator service calls, the repairs that come up most involve the ice maker, defrost system (heater, thermostat, sensor) and thermistor / temperature sensor. The list near the top of this page shows the rest.

How many Samsung refrigerators have you repaired?

100 Samsung refrigerator repairs are in our service records so far, and customers rated those visits 4.9 out of 5 stars.

Why does my Samsung fridge say OF OF?

It's in Cooling Off mode, the display mode stores use. You might also see O FF or scrolling bars. The lights and display work but nothing gets cold. To get out of it, press and hold the two highest buttons on the left of the control panel. A chime after 5 to 8 seconds tells you it worked. Some newer models want the top right button held as well. Nothing's broken.

What does 22E mean on my Samsung fridge?

It's a refrigerator fan error, shown as 22C on some models. Samsung says it frequently follows a door that was left open too long, which lets the fan ice up. To thaw it, Samsung has you cut power and prop the doors open for a few hours before plugging back in. A 22E that returns means the fan motor or the defrost system that keeps the coil clear needs service.

Why is my Samsung ice maker not making ice?

Go through Samsung's basics first. The freezer should be at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or colder, Ice Off shouldn't be lit, the bucket needs to be fully seated, and the water filter should be under six months old. Low water pressure slows production too. Give it up to 24 hours after any change. Codes like 33E, 39E or 40E mean a heater, the ice maker or the ice room fan has failed.

What do 83E, 85E and 86E mean on a Samsung fridge?

All three are compressor power codes. Samsung defines 83E as abnormal compressor current, 85E as low voltage from a brownout, and 86E as overvoltage from a surge. Storms and outages commonly set them off. A 60-second power cut, at the plug or the breaker, can clear them. A code that returns after that means the compressor or its inverter board needs diagnosis.

How much does Samsung refrigerator repair cost?

The trip and diagnostic fee starts at $129. Your technician quotes the repair upfront using the Appliance Blue Book, before any work begins, so you can decide with no surprises.

Are you a factory-authorized Samsung service provider?

Yes. Omega Force Appliance Repair is a factory-authorized Samsung service provider.

Is the repair guaranteed?

Repairs you pay us for directly come with a 10-year warranty on parts and a 60-day labor warranty. When a manufacturer, home warranty company or other third party pays for the repair, that company's warranty applies instead.

Omega Force Appliance Repair is a factory-authorized Samsung service provider.
