Fast, professional Kenmore refrigerator repair from technicians who fix Kenmore refrigerators frequently. Same or next business day on most calls.
Counted from our technicians' notes on 32 Kenmore refrigerator service calls.
Kenmore refrigerators came out of several different factories. Whirlpool supplied the 106 series, which leans heavily toward side-by-sides with a few French door units in the mix. LG is behind the 795 prefix, and that group includes plenty of Kenmore Elite French door fridges. If yours is a top-freezer, odds are good that Electrolux built it and the number begins with 253. The tag that tells you could be tucked behind a crisper drawer, up near the ceiling or down by the floor of the fresh-food section, or on one of its side walls.
It's a common complaint, and the cause is typically a defrost failure, where a bad heater, defrost thermostat or sensor lets frost choke off the evaporator. A failed evaporator fan motor does the same thing. Older models with a freezer control knob work a little differently. They send cold air from the freezer through a damper, and a damper that sticks closed starves the fresh-food side even while the freezer is fine.
When both sections are warm, or the compressor keeps clicking on and off, the suspects are dirty condenser coils, a failed start device, or a compressor or sealed-system problem. No ice or no water at the door comes from a kinked or frozen supply line, a clogged filter, a failed water inlet valve or a failed ice maker. Water on the floor means a cracked water line, a leaking inlet valve or a clogged defrost drain.
A frost-free refrigerator stops cooling for a short stretch every several hours and runs a heater on the evaporator coil to melt the frost. A limit thermostat or sensor shuts that heat off once the ice is gone. When any piece of that loop fails, frost keeps building until air can't get through the coil. The giveaway is a fresh-food section that gets warmer over several days while the freezer still feels cold.
Many refrigerators are designed to run only within a certain room-temperature range, and an unheated garage in January can fall well outside it. A garage fridge that only misbehaves in the cold months may simply be in the wrong spot, with no failed part at all.
Defrost parts, fans, dampers, valves and ice makers are routine repairs, no matter which of the three companies built the fridge. A sealed-system repair on an older Kenmore is where replacement deserves a close look.

The customer said the fresh food is not cooling well but the freezer is fine. Its making ice and freezing food. I found the fan in the freezer is not working and ice is built up. The customer said the fresh food door does not seal tight. I removed the door and found the door stop screws are rubbing on the door support. I put a washer on the support so the door is up higher and now the screws do not rub. I removed the freezer evaporator cover and completely defrosted the evaporator and then replaced the evaporator fan. The fan is running now and now I get cold air into the refrigerator. I advised the customer to wait 24 hours for temps to be back to normal.

In our technicians' notes on 32 Kenmore refrigerator service calls, the repairs that come up most involve the defrost system (heater, thermostat, sensor), compressor or sealed system and ice maker. The list near the top of this page shows the rest.
32 Kenmore refrigerator repairs are in our service records so far, and customers rated those visits 4.9 out of 5 stars.
Air moving across the freezer's evaporator coil is what cools the fresh-food section. When the defrost heater, thermostat or sensor fails, frost blocks that coil and the fresh-food side slowly warms. A failed evaporator fan does the same, and so does a damper stuck closed on older models. The repair depends on who built your refrigerator, so have the model number ready.
Read the first three digits on the model tag. A 106 prefix means Whirlpool made it, and 795 points to LG. Electrolux built a large share of Kenmore top-freezers, and you'll usually see 253 at the front of those numbers. Knowing the real builder matters because it decides which parts will fit.
Many refrigerators are designed to run only within a certain room-temperature range, and an unheated Minnesota or Wisconsin garage in winter can fall outside it. A fridge that works fine all summer but struggles once it gets cold is likely reacting to the location. Look up the temperature range in your owner's manual before assuming a part has failed.
The water supply is the first place to look. The valve behind the refrigerator should be fully open and the line free of kinks. A clogged or overdue water filter can slow ice production, and the freezer needs to be cold enough, around 0 degrees. Water reaching the door dispenser with no ice forming points to the ice maker or its fill tube.
The trip and diagnostic fee starts at $129. Your technician quotes the repair upfront using the Appliance Blue Book, before any work begins, so you can decide with no surprises.
Repairs you pay us for directly come with a 10-year warranty on parts and a 60-day labor warranty. When a manufacturer, home warranty company or other third party pays for the repair, that company's warranty applies instead.
