Top-loader or front-loader, Whirlpool or LG

Most Kenmore top-load washers came from Whirlpool and have model numbers starting with 110. Most Kenmore front-loaders were built by LG and start with 796. A 110 top-loader takes Whirlpool parts, and a 796 front-loader lists LG parts right down to the drain pump and door gasket. That narrows the diagnosis before we arrive. On a front-loader the number is on the back panel or around the door frame, and on a top-loader it's under the lid.

Drain, fill and start problems

On LG-built 796 models, a washer that won't drain or spin gets fixed by the drain pump most of the time, and a sock or coin that made it into the pump is a common reason. Top-loader drain pumps clog or fail too. A washer that won't start or quits mid-cycle points to a failed door lock on a front-loader, or a lid switch or lid lock on a top-loader. Slow fill or no water at all comes down to closed supply valves, clogged inlet screens or a failed water inlet valve.

Banging, roaring and walking across the floor

Loud banging or a washer that walks during spin can come from uneven leveling legs. Past that, look for worn suspension rods on top-loaders, or worn shocks and springs on front-loaders. A roar or grind during spin is worn tub bearings, and on front-loaders a corroded or cracked spider arm behind the drum tends to come along with it. Dead controls or random codes can mean a bad control board, but only after the simpler causes are ruled out.

What UE means on an LG-built Kenmore

Kenmore washers came out of different factories, so one code can mean different things. On LG-built 796 front-loaders, UE means the washer sensed an unbalanced load and stopped spinning. Spread the load out, don't wash a single heavy item by itself, and check that all four feet are planted on the floor. For any other code, go by the manual for your exact model number.

Try these before you book

  1. Make sure both water valves behind the washer are all the way open and the hoses aren't kinked.
  2. On a 796 front-loader, the pump filter sits behind a small door at the lower front. Cut the power before you open it. Set a shallow pan underneath and let the little drain hose empty into it, and only then unscrew the filter to clear out whatever's caught.
  3. Level the washer so all four feet sit firm on the floor.
  4. Use HE detergent only, in the right amount, since too many suds can stop the spin.

Where the repair stops making sense

Pumps, lid locks, valves and suspension parts are routine repairs. Bearings and spider arms on a front-loader take the most labor, and on an older washer that's typically where the replacement conversation begins.

Kenmore washer repair FAQ

What goes wrong most often on Kenmore washers?

In our technicians' notes on 32 Kenmore washer service calls, the repairs that come up most involve the drain pump, door lock or lid switch and water inlet valve. The list near the top of this page shows the rest.

How many Kenmore washers have you repaired?

32 Kenmore washer repairs are in our service records so far, and customers rated those visits 4.9 out of 5 stars.

What does UE mean on a Kenmore washer?

On LG-built Kenmore front-loaders, the ones with model numbers starting 796, UE means the washer sensed an unbalanced load and stopped the spin. Common triggers are a washer that's out of level, a drum packed too full, a lone heavy item, or a sheet that balled up. Balanced loads that still trip UE again and again suggest a broken shock or suspension spring.

Why won't my Kenmore front load washer drain?

On LG-built 796 models, the drain pump is the fix in the large majority of no-drain cases, and a lot of the time a coin, sock or other small item got past the drum. The first job is the pump filter behind the little door at the lower front, with a pan ready for the water that comes out. A clear filter with a pump that hums or stays silent means the pump has likely failed.

How do I know who made my Kenmore washer?

Check the first three digits of the model number, found around the door or under the lid. Washers starting with 110 were built by Whirlpool, and those are mostly top-loaders. Front-loaders starting with 796 came from LG. The parts for the two designs are different, so we need the full model number to order the right pump, lock or bearing kit.

Why does my Kenmore washer shake so bad on spin?

Look at the load and the floor before anything else. An unbalanced load, or a washer with one foot off the floor, will shake no matter the model. With an even load and a level washer, worn suspension parts are next. That means suspension rods on many top-loaders and shocks and springs on front-loaders. Roaring along with the shaking points to the tub bearings.

How much does Kenmore washer repair cost?

The trip and diagnostic fee starts at $129. Your technician quotes the repair upfront using the Appliance Blue Book, before any work begins, so you can decide with no surprises.

Is the repair guaranteed?

Repairs you pay us for directly come with a 10-year warranty on parts and a 60-day labor warranty. When a manufacturer, home warranty company or other third party pays for the repair, that company's warranty applies instead.

Kenmore is a trademark of its owner.
