Garbage Disposal repair you can count on

Our technicians diagnose the problem, explain your options and quote the repair upfront before any work begins. Our vans carry the most-needed parts, so many repairs are finished on the first visit. If a part has to be ordered, the same technician comes back to install it.

A garbage disposal is one of the hardest-working appliances in the kitchen, and one of the easiest to take for granted until it hums, leaks or stops. We diagnose and repair disposals of every major brand, and when a unit is worn out or leaking from its body, we replace it with a new one and connect it to your sink and dishwasher.

Disposal problems we fix

  • Hums but doesn't spin. Usually a jam: something hard is wedged between the turntable and the grind ring.
  • Won't turn on at all. A tripped overload reset button, a tripped breaker, or a bad wall switch, outlet or wiring.
  • Leaks. Where it leaks tells us what's wrong: the sink flange and plumber's putty at the top, the dishwasher hose or drain pipe connection on the side, or the unit's own body at the bottom. A leaking body almost always means the disposal needs replacing.
  • Drains slowly or backs up into the other sink bowl or the dishwasher.
  • Grinding, rattling or metal-on-metal noise. Something like a utensil, a bottle cap or a fruit pit is inside, or the bearings are wearing out.
  • Bad smells that cleaning doesn't fix.

Try this first when it hums but won't spin

  1. Turn the disposal off at the wall switch. For extra safety, unplug it under the sink or switch off its breaker.
  2. Never reach into the disposal with your hand. Use tongs or pliers to pull out anything you can see.
  3. Find the hex socket in the center of the bottom of the unit. Insert the hex wrench that came with it (usually 1/4 inch) and work it back and forth until it turns freely.
  4. Wait a few minutes for the motor to cool, then press the red reset button on the bottom.
  5. Restore power, run cold water and turn it on. If it still hums or trips again, give us a call.

Keep your disposal running

  • Run cold water before, during and for about 15 seconds after grinding, so the waste flushes all the way down the drain.
  • Feed it a little at a time instead of a whole plate at once.
  • Keep these out: grease and oil, bones, fruit pits, corn husks, celery and other stringy vegetables, potato peels, coffee grounds, and pasta or rice, which swell and clog the pipes.
  • Run it every few days, even when you don't need to, so parts don't rust or seize.
  • Freshen it up by grinding a handful of ice cubes, which helps knock buildup off the grind chamber, followed by a few small citrus peels.
  • Skip harsh drain chemicals. They can damage the disposal and the plumbing beneath it.

Repair or replace?

Jams, reset trips, switch and wiring problems, and leaks at the sink flange or drain connections are usually repairs. A disposal whose body is leaking or rusted through, or whose motor has failed, is usually better replaced, and today's units are quieter and grind better than older ones. Our technician will tell you which makes sense before any work begins.

Garbage Disposal repair questions

Why does my garbage disposal hum but not turn?

It's almost always jammed. Turn off the power, never put your hand inside, and use the hex wrench in the socket on the bottom of the unit to free the turntable. Then press the red reset button and try again with cold water running. If it still hums, give us a call.

Where is the reset button on a garbage disposal?

On most disposals it's a small red button on the bottom of the unit, under the sink. If the disposal shuts off and won't restart, let the motor cool for a few minutes, then press it.

My disposal is new and now the dishwasher won't drain. Why?

New disposals come with a plastic knockout plug inside the dishwasher inlet. If the plug wasn't knocked out during installation, the dishwasher can't drain into the disposal. A technician can remove it and clear the line.

Can coffee grounds and eggshells go down the disposal?

It's best to keep them out. Coffee grounds build up in the pipes like sand, and eggshell membranes can wrap around the grinding parts. Grease, bones, fruit pits, potato peels, stringy vegetables, pasta and rice belong in the trash or compost too.

Do you replace garbage disposals?

Yes. When a disposal is leaking from its body or the motor has failed, replacement is usually the better value. We'll quote the repair or replacement upfront, then install the new unit and connect it to your sink and dishwasher.

“Evan was great. Their automated timing failed me, though. He was supposed to come between particular hours, and after that time and passed, he didn’t show. I used their automated tracking service which helped, but I finally realized after tracking several times that I was going to have to take some action. It was by by now about 4 to 5 hours past the time he was supposed to come. I finally called them because I was going to have to leave at 6 PM. We arranged for me to be rescheduled.to for two days later. They arranged for me to be the first one on the list so that there wouldn’t be any lengthy waiting. Evan was certainly courteous diagnosed the problem practically instantly – it was an easy fix – and he showed me how to fix it the next time. Overall, I was totally satisfied with Evan and generally with the service with the glitch for the timing. I understand that people get tied up, just would’ve been appreciated if somebody had been proactive and let me know that it wasn’t gonna be possible to complete the job in the it was originally scheduled my having to put in a call. But everybody was very courteous and we got it to work in the end.”
