From mixer company to a full KitchenAid kitchen
KitchenAid got its start making stand mixers under the Hobart Manufacturing Company, and it built its first dishwasher in 1949. Whirlpool Corporation bought the brand in 1986 and put refrigerators into the lineup that same year. These days the major appliance side covers dishwashers, refrigerators, ranges (commercial-style ones included), wall ovens, cooktops, built-in and over-the-range microwaves, hoods and warming drawers.
Since KitchenAid is part of the Whirlpool family, a lot of its parts move through the same supply network as Whirlpool and Maytag parts. That makes them easier to get. It doesn't make them interchangeable, though. The right part still comes down to your exact model and serial number.
Where KitchenAid puts the model tag
Every product hides it in a different spot. Here's where to look on each one:
- With a built-in dishwasher's door open, look at the tub frame on the left.
- Side-by-side refrigerators have it on the right wall of the fresh-food side. Top-freezer, bottom-freezer and French door models use the left wall in there.
- Commercial-style ranges put it on the oven cavity's ceiling. Standard ranges have it on the frame behind the oven door or the storage drawer.
- A wall oven's tag is up high, inside the oven at the top.
- Cooktops have it printed on the rating plate, which you'll find by looking under the cooktop.
- On an over-the-range microwave, open the door and look at the front frame.
Two KitchenAid quirks that change the diagnosis
Lots of KitchenAid dishwashers have a removable two-piece filter under the bottom rack, and the owner is the one expected to clean it. Other models use a maintenance-free filter with a little foreign-object cup sitting in front of the pump. Which one you've got explains a good share of drain and cleaning complaints.
On the refrigerator side, several KitchenAid models were built with the Preserva food care system. It runs separate evaporators for the fresh-food and freezer sections so the two air streams stay apart. That's more cooling hardware than a basic single-evaporator fridge has, and it changes how we track down a cooling problem.
A few habits that save time later
Keep the model and serial number saved on your phone. Nothing gets the right part ordered faster. Exact coverage depends on your model and when you bought it. Some KitchenAid dishwasher warranties, for instance, have carried longer coverage on specific parts like the stainless tub. And in Minnesota and Wisconsin, hard water leaves calcium on dishwasher filters and spray parts. A soft brush on the filter and a cleaning cycle once a month go a long way.
