Counted from our technicians' notes on 64 KitchenAid dishwasher service calls.

Leaks, dirty dishes and water left in the tub

Water on the floor tends to come from a worn door gasket, a loose fill connection or a leak down in the base. Many models have a drip tray with a float switch under the tub, and once water gets into that tray the cycle stops. Dishes that come out dirty or with a gritty film point to a clogged filter, plugged spray arm holes or a weak circulation (wash) pump.

When water is still sitting in the tub after a cycle, look for a clogged filter, a kinked drain hose, a blocked disposer inlet or a failing drain pump. A machine that won't fill, or fills slowly, has either a closed supply valve or a water inlet valve that's going bad. One that hums but doesn't wash is pointing at the circulation pump or motor more often than not.

Reading F and E codes

On a model with a display the code simply reads as F#E#. No display? The Clean light blinks it out in two bursts with a short break between them. The F number is however many flashes come before the break, and the E number is how many come after it. Codes vary by model, so check your manual if yours isn't in the table.

CodeWhat it usually means
F1E1Problem with the control module
F7E2Wash motor fault
F8E4Leak, water found in the drip tray
F8E5Fill valve stuck open
F9E1Drain is taking too long or not happening
F9E2Drain motor fault

Seeing F8E5? Shut off the water supply to the dishwasher first, then give us a call.

Five things to try before booking a visit

  1. Clean the filter under the bottom rack. On two-piece designs, the upper section releases with a quarter turn counterclockwise. Rinse both parts under the tap and lock them back in place with no gaps showing.
  2. Check that the drain hose behind the dishwasher isn't kinked, and run the garbage disposer to clear it.
  3. On a brand-new install, make sure the disposer knockout plug was actually taken out.
  4. Cut power for 30 seconds at the plug or the breaker, then restore it.
  5. Suds mean dish soap got in there. Let them settle and use automatic dishwasher detergent only.

For the model number, open the door and check the tub frame on its left edge. On double-drawer models, look at the top drawer's right-hand side instead.

Hard water and your filter

Hard water is common across our Minnesota and Wisconsin service areas. Calcium builds up on the filter and inside the spray arm holes, and wash results suffer long before any part actually breaks. Clean the filter every few months, or monthly if you run four or more loads a week without scraping, and run a dishwasher cleaner about once a month.

Is it worth fixing?

Pumps, valves, gaskets and spray arms can all be replaced, and the stainless tub in most KitchenAid models holds up for many years. The main exception is a leak that has rusted the frame or rotted the floor underneath, and then a new dishwasher makes more sense.

KitchenAid dishwasher repair FAQ

What goes wrong most often on KitchenAid dishwashers?

In our technicians' notes on 64 KitchenAid dishwasher service calls, the repairs that come up most involve the leak or door gasket, circulation pump or motor and drain pump. The list near the top of this page shows the rest.

How many KitchenAid dishwashers have you repaired?

64 KitchenAid dishwasher repairs are in our service records so far, and customers rated those visits 4.8 out of 5 stars.

What does F9E1 mean on a KitchenAid dishwasher?

It means the dishwasher took too long to drain. Go after the easy causes first. Check for a clogged filter under the bottom rack, a kinked drain hose, a full or clogged garbage disposer, or a blocked air gap. On a new install the disposer knockout plug may still be in place. If the code comes back after all that and a power reset, the drain pump is the likely culprit.

How do I read the blinking Clean light on my KitchenAid dishwasher?

Watch the Clean light. Say it blinks seven times, goes dark for a second or two, then blinks once. That's F7E1, with the flashes before the short break giving you the F number and the flashes after it giving you the E number. Expect a longer gap of about five seconds before the whole thing repeats. Models with a display just show the code.

When should I clean the filter in my KitchenAid dishwasher?

KitchenAid's general guideline is every three to six months, but how you use the machine matters. Running four to seven loads a week without scraping calls for monthly cleaning. A few scraped loads a week might only need it once a year. Some models have a Clean Filter light, and maintenance-free models just need the small debris cup emptied.

Why is there water in the bottom of my KitchenAid dishwasher?

A little water around the filter area is normal on many dishwashers. More than that points to a clogged filter, a kinked or clogged drain hose, a blocked disposer connection or a failed drain pump. Clean the filter and look at the hose first. Water still sitting in the tub afterward, or an F9E1 or F9E2 code, means the drain system needs a closer look.

How much does KitchenAid dishwasher repair cost?

The trip and diagnostic fee starts at $129. Your technician quotes the repair upfront using the Appliance Blue Book, before any work begins, so you can decide with no surprises.

Are you a factory-authorized KitchenAid service provider?

Yes. Omega Force Appliance Repair is a factory-authorized KitchenAid service provider.

Is the repair guaranteed?

Repairs you pay us for directly come with a 10-year warranty on parts and a 60-day labor warranty. When a manufacturer, home warranty company or other third party pays for the repair, that company's warranty applies instead.

Omega Force Appliance Repair is a factory-authorized KitchenAid service provider.
