Fast, professional GE dishwasher repair from technicians who fix GE dishwashers frequently. Same or next business day on most calls.

Some water sitting in the sump is normal. On models with an Ultra Fine filter, though, it shouldn't cover the tub floor. The common causes are clogged filters, a kinked drain hose, a packed air gap, or a disposer whose knockout plug never got removed. Once those are ruled out, a drain pump that hums or makes no sound at all puts the pump or its control under suspicion.
Door leaks tend to come from a worn or dirty door gasket, a tub that isn't level, or suds from the wrong detergent. GE specifically warns against hand dishwashing soap, which foams out through the vents. Water showing up underneath can be the inlet valve, the hoses or the pump seals.
For dishes that come out dirty, GE's own checklist starts at the sink. The water there should be 120 degrees or hotter. Then clean the filters and clear the spray-arm jets. Hard water may call for more detergent or a softener.
No water at all? A closed supply valve, a kinked inlet hose or a failed water inlet valve will stop the fill. GE dishwashers need between 20 and 120 PSI of water pressure.
Models with a display show codes. Lots of others blink lights instead, and no single model uses all of these.
| Code | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| C1 | Pumping out during the drain took over two minutes. Check the air gap, drain hose and disposer. |
| C3 | The dishwasher won't drain. |
| C4 | The float switch is stuck or bad, or the drain or sump is clogged. |
| C6 | Water coming in is cooler than about 120 degrees Fahrenheit. |
| C7 | The water temperature sensor circuit isn't working. |
| C8 | Something is keeping the detergent cup from opening all the way. |
| FTD or F56 | Failure to drain. Check the drain hose, air gap and disposer. |
| H2O | Low water. Make sure the inlet hose isn't kinked. |
| LEAK DETECTED | On leak-detection models, it sensed a possible leak and canceled the cycle. |
| PF | There was a power failure. Pick the cycle again and press Start. |
Flipping the breaker off for roughly 30 seconds clears a lot of codes. One that comes back means a part needs testing.
Open the door. The model number is on the left or right inside edge of the tub, or on the right side edge of the door itself.
Water heavy with minerals leaves white film and scale on the filters and spray arms. GE suggests a citric acid cleaner, or a vinegar rinse with no detergent, to strip the film. Adjust the rinse aid setting if spots show up.

In our technicians' notes on 107 GE dishwasher service calls, the repairs that come up most involve the leak or door gasket, filter or clog and drain pump. The list near the top of this page shows the rest.
107 GE dishwasher repairs are in our service records so far, and customers rated those visits 5.0 out of 5 stars.
A little water in the sump is normal on a GE. When it covers the tub floor, clean the filters, check the drain hose under the sink for kinks, clear the air gap and run the disposer. Just replaced the disposer? Make sure its knockout plug came out. Water that still won't go down could mean the drain pump needs service.
According to GE, C1 means the drain pump-out took longer than two minutes. That points more to a partial restriction than a dead pump. Clean the air gap, make sure the drain hose isn't kinked or crushed, and run the garbage disposer. A C1 that keeps returning after all that calls for a look at the drain pump and the drain path.
About every other month, per GE's current manual, and more with heavy use or gritty dishes. Rinse the Fine and Ultra Fine filters in warm soapy water with a soft brush. Skip scouring pads. They scratch the fine mesh.
GE mostly blames cheap phosphate-free detergent combined with hard water. To get rid of the film, run an empty cycle with a citric acid dishwasher cleaner, or a vinegar rinse and no detergent. After that, switch to a quality detergent, adjust how much you use for your water hardness, and keep the rinse aid filled. Really hard water may need a softener.
The trip and diagnostic fee starts at $129. Your technician quotes the repair upfront using the Appliance Blue Book, before any work begins, so you can decide with no surprises.
