What we fix most on GE dryers

  1. Vent restriction
  2. Drive belt
  3. Heating element
  4. Thermal fuse or thermostat
  5. Drum rollers or idler pulley
  6. Motor

Counted from our technicians' notes on 45 GE dryer service calls.

Tumbling, but no heat

On electric models the heating element is the part that fails most. Next in line is the thermal fuse, a one-time safety part that opens when the dryer overheats, and a clogged vent is the usual reason it blows. Thermostats can also be at fault, along with the ignition parts on gas models. An electric dryer that tumbles cold may simply have one of its two house breakers tripped.

Slow drying and the vent nobody checks

GE's list of common causes includes a dirty lint filter, a vent that's restricted or crushed, overloading, and a washer that isn't spinning fast enough. The partly clogged vent is the one people miss, and it's also what makes the dryer overheat.

Thumps, squeals and scraping

Thumping or rumbling comes from worn drum rollers. A squeal from down low in the cabinet is a failing idler pulley. Worn drum slides scrape, and a frayed belt thumps. GE says to stop using the dryer until the noise gets checked, because a dragging drum strains the belt and motor.

A dryer that won't start or tumble gets a look at the plug, the breaker and the door latch first. Motor humming or running while the drum stays still? A broken drive belt or worn idler is likely. When nothing happens at all, the motor or a safety part may have failed.

Six things to check on your own

  • Clean the lint filter every load. Fabric softener can coat the screen with a film you can't see, so scrub it with a little dish soap and warm water now and then.
  • Use 4-inch rigid metal duct with a short run, and skip the white plastic flex hose.
  • Clean the duct at least once a year and make sure the outside hood flaps open freely.
  • For an electric dryer, reset or replace both breakers or fuses.
  • For a gas dryer, check that the shutoff valve behind it is all the way open.
  • On GE models from 2019 on, a display showing 1 or 2 means you need to pick the gas or electric setting before it'll run.

Winter vents in Minnesota and Wisconsin

Long vent runs through the cold collect damp lint, and the outdoor hood can stick with ice or snow. When drying times start creeping up in winter, check that outside hood first, then get the whole duct cleaned.

The tag is right inside the door

Open the door and look at the front face of the dryer opening, on the left or right side.

Worth fixing?

Belts, rollers, thermal fuses and elements are routine parts on a GE dryer. A scorched drum seal or a burned terminal block is different. Figure out why the dryer overheated before anyone starts swapping parts.

GE DryerOct 21, 2024River Falls, WITechnician: Aaron

Model GTD42GASJWW

The customers were getting the loud scratching noise coming from their dryer during the selected cycle. I popped the top off and inspected the drum and the drum belt. I took the door assembly off to inspect for any objects that might be contacting the drum while tumbling.I also inspected the blower motor assembly and found debris that had built up in the blower motor housing. I cleaned up the lint and other objects and secured the tin covering the blower motor housing because it was scraping and making contact with the drum during tumbling. Pictures attached of everything I found. I let the customer know what I had found and double check that dryer works the way they expect.

“Super job. Runs better than new. A+ Grade”

GE dryer repair FAQ

What goes wrong most often on GE dryers?

In our technicians' notes on 45 GE dryer service calls, the repairs that come up most involve the vent restriction, drive belt and heating element. The list near the top of this page shows the rest.

How many GE dryers have you repaired?

45 GE dryer repairs are in our service records so far, and customers rated those visits 4.9 out of 5 stars.

Why is my GE dryer running but not heating?

On an electric GE, check that both household breakers are on first. The motor can run on one, but the heater needs both. The parts that fail most are the heating element and the thermal fuse, which blows when the dryer overheats, typically because of a clogged vent. Gas model? Confirm the gas shutoff is fully open. Always clean the vent before replacing a fuse.

Why does my GE dryer take two cycles to dry clothes?

Restricted airflow is the usual cause. Clean the lint filter, make sure the duct isn't crushed or kinked, and check that the outdoor flap opens. GE recommends 4-inch rigid metal duct, cleaned at least yearly. Don't overload it, and see whether the washer is spinning properly, since wetter loads take longer. An electric dryer running on 120 volts can take up to three times as long.

What is the thumping noise in my GE dryer?

A rhythmic thump tends to be a worn drum roller with a flat spot, especially after the dryer has sat unused for a while. A frayed or damaged belt can thump too, and GE recommends service for that. Squealing from underneath points to the idler pulley. Look in the drum for coins or buttons, then have the rollers and belt inspected.

Why does my GE dryer show 1 or 2 and not start?

That's the fuel setting. GE dryers from 2019 on need it chosen before they'll run. Press Start to toggle to 1 for electric or 2 for gas, and it should work normally. If it keeps reverting, the control may need service.

How much does GE dryer repair cost?

The trip and diagnostic fee starts at $129. Your technician quotes the repair upfront using the Appliance Blue Book, before any work begins, so you can decide with no surprises.

Are you a factory-authorized GE service provider?

Yes. Omega Force Appliance Repair is a factory-authorized GE service provider.

Is the repair guaranteed?

Repairs you pay us for directly come with a 10-year warranty on parts and a 60-day labor warranty. When a manufacturer, home warranty company or other third party pays for the repair, that company's warranty applies instead.

Omega Force Appliance Repair is a factory-authorized GE service provider.
