Counted from our technicians' notes on 60 Speed Queen dryer service calls.
What goes wrong on a Speed Queen dryer
The DR3, DR5, DR7 and DC5 all share a 7.0 cubic foot galvanized drum and come in gas or electric. Most service calls end up involving the same short list of parts.
Thumping, squealing or grinding comes from worn drum rollers or a worn idler pulley. The idler holds tension on the belt, and it squeals once its bearing wears. When the belt finally breaks, the motor runs but the drum doesn't turn.
Slow drying is most often a restricted vent. Lint packed in the duct, a crushed flex line behind the dryer or an outside flap that's stuck will all choke the airflow. Clothes stay damp and parts run hot.
No heat while the drum tumbles depends on the fuel. Electric dryers lose heat to a burned-out heating element, or to a thermal fuse or thermostat that has opened. Gas dryers lose it to a weak igniter or failing gas valve coils, and a gas dryer that heats at first and then quits partway through a cycle is a common sign of tired coils. A dryer that won't start at all may have a blown thermal fuse, a bad door switch or, on electronic models, a control board problem.
Why the vent matters more than you'd think
The thermal fuse blows to keep the dryer from overheating, and a restricted exhaust is one of the main reasons it gets that hot. Put in a new fuse without fixing the airflow and it will likely blow again. Minnesota and Wisconsin winters add a twist, since lint and frost can build up where the vent leaves the house. Make sure that outside flap swings freely.
Five checks before you call us
- Clean the lint filter and look down into the filter slot for lint buildup.
- Check the breaker. Electric dryers run on a double breaker, and if half of it trips the drum can turn with no heat.
- Start the dryer and walk outside. You should feel strong, warm air coming out of the vent hood.
- Make sure the duct behind the dryer isn't crushed.
- On gas models, confirm the gas valve to the dryer is open. Anything past that valve is a job for a technician.
Gas or electric? The model number tells us
Speed Queen dryer model numbers start with the series, like DR7 or DC5, and the last letter is E for electric or G for gas. Tell us which one you have when you book so the right heating parts come along.
Keeping it running for years
Clean the lint filter every load and have the full vent run cleaned on a regular basis. Use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, never plastic or foil. Don't overload, since big loads dry slowly and are hard on rollers and belts.
Speed Queen covers its dryers with 3 to 7 years of parts and labor, depending on the model. Rollers, belts, idlers, elements, igniters and coils are all routine parts, so repair almost always makes sense unless the drum or cabinet is damaged.
