Samsung builds French-door, side-by-side and Bespoke refrigerators, including Family Hub models with a big touchscreen. It also makes front-load and top-load washers, dryers, ranges (some with the Flex Duo divider that turns one oven into two), dishwashers and microwaves. A few Samsung traits change how these get diagnosed.
Twin Cooling Plus cools the fridge and freezer sections independently, so each side has its own fan and its own error code. The refrigerators use a variable-speed Digital Inverter Compressor, and Samsung's warranty page covers it longer than the standard one year. Then there are the codes. Many newer models use a C version of an older E code, so 4E and 4C both mean no water. And a dryer code that seems to include an inverted F actually contains a t.
Finding the label on each Samsung appliance
For refrigerators, open the fresh-food door and look near the top of the left side wall. Some models have a second label outside near the bottom left. Top-load washers keep it on the cabinet's back panel. Front-load washers and dryers mostly have it around the door, either on the frame or close to the seal, and the back of the unit is the fallback spot. Ranges hide it in one of three places, under the left side of the cooktop, on the left frame behind the bottom drawer, or on the side of the front frame you see with the oven door open. Dishwasher labels are on the inside edge of the tub opening or on the door itself, along its top or side edge.
Four habits that head off a Samsung repair
- Small or cloudy ice is a hint the fridge water filter is overdue. Even without that sign, swap it about every six months.
- Clean the dryer lint screen after every load. Samsung says most of its dryer temperature and heating codes trace back to a clogged lint screen or vent.
- Run the washer's Self Clean cycle when the reminder comes on.
- Write down any code before you unplug or reset. Samsung points out that clearing it too soon makes diagnosis harder.
Storm season and garage laundry
After a storm or brownout in Southwest Florida, a Samsung refrigerator may log a power code like 85E (low voltage) or 86E (surge). Samsung's advice is to leave it without power for a full 60 seconds. When the code keeps returning, the fridge needs service.
Up in Minnesota and Wisconsin, Samsung's dryer vent test won't run correctly when the dryer is below freezing, and a laundry setup in the garage can trip the same temperature check.

Where's the model number on my Samsung fridge?
Open the fresh-food door and look near the top of the left inside wall. Samsung puts the model and serial label there on most refrigerators, and some also have one outside near the bottom left. That model code tells a technician which ice maker, fans and control board you have, so a quick photo of the label saves time.
How long is the warranty on a Samsung refrigerator compressor?
Samsung's US warranty page lists one year of parts and labor on the whole refrigerator and five years of parts and labor on the sealed system. The Digital Inverter Compressor gets ten years of parts coverage. That same page isn't consistent about labor on the compressor, so read your own warranty sheet. Pull out the warranty sheet for your model, since coverage isn't the same across the whole line.
What does dn mean on a Samsung washer or dryer?
The machine is pulling in a software update. Keep it plugged in and powered the whole time, because an interrupted download can leave the control unable to run. Samsung puts a washer update at roughly 15 minutes, and a dryer reboots itself once it's done. When dn is still on the display 24 hours later, it needs service.
Why does my Samsung show a C code instead of an E code?
Lots of newer Samsung models use C versions of older E codes, and they generally mean the same thing. A washer showing 4E or 4C isn't filling, for example, and 22E or 22C on a refrigerator points to the fan. Samsung's code lists group the pairs together. Some codes are specific to certain models, so check your manual for the exact meaning on yours.
