A Samsung dryer that squeals or thumps
Most noise complaints on Samsung dryers come from worn drum rollers and a worn idler pulley. It tends to start as a squeal or a steady thump and gets louder with heavy loads like towels. When the motor runs and the drum doesn't turn, the drive belt has snapped or come off.
Long dry times, hE and tS
Samsung says most of its temperature and heating codes come from a clogged lint screen or vent that traps heat. Clean the screen, then the vent run and the outdoor hood. Repeated overheating wears out the thermal fuse and thermostats, which is why those parts tend to fail alongside a restricted vent.
When it runs but won't heat, or won't run at all
Electric models first. Check both halves of the breaker, since Samsung notes that a weak supply voltage reaching the heater can bring up heating errors. With correct power, the failed part is most likely the heating element, a blown thermal fuse or a bad thermostat. Gas models show HC2 when the burner didn't ignite, which points to the igniter or the gas valve coils. Leave that work to a technician.
A dryer that won't start may have laundry caught in the door latch, or a blown thermal fuse that leaves it dead. A motor that hums without turning, or a 3C code, points to the motor or its start circuit.
What Samsung dryer codes mean
| Code | What it usually means |
|---|
| hE, HC | Overheating, typically from a clogged lint screen or vent. On electric models, low voltage to the heater can set it off too |
| tS, t5, tO, t0, tE, tC | Temperature or temperature sensor problem, often caused by a clogged lint screen or vent |
| HC2 | Gas didn't ignite (gas models) |
| dE, dC, dF, do, d0 | Door, latch or door sensor problem |
| 9C1, 9E, 2E | Power supply problem. Wrong voltage, an extension cord or a shared circuit |
| bE, 6E | A control button is stuck |
| 3C | Motor problem |
| AE, AC, Et | The control boards aren't talking to each other |
| Clg, C80, C90 | Vent blockage test result. Vent clogged, about 80% blocked, or more than 90% blocked |
Codes vary by model, and Samsung dryers without a display flash lights instead. If you see what looks like an upside-down F, read it as a lowercase t. Write the code down before resetting anything.
What to check first
- Clean the lint screen, then run the vent blockage test if your dryer has one. The C-codes only show up after that test.
- Look at the outside vent hood and check the duct behind the dryer for crushing.
- Plug the dryer into its own outlet. No extension cords.
- For bE, turn the dryer off and press around the edges of each button to free whichever one is stuck.
- For a communication code, power the dryer off for 60 seconds and turn it back on.
The model label is on the door frame or around the opening. Can't find it there? Check the back of the cabinet.
Testing the vent in a cold garage
Samsung's vent blockage test won't run properly if the dryer itself is colder than freezing or warmer than 104°F, and it shows Ct instead. In a cold Minnesota or Wisconsin garage, let the dryer warm up before you test. Snow and frost can also block a low outdoor vent hood.
Repairs worth doing on a Samsung dryer
Rollers, idler pulleys, belts, elements and thermal fuses are routine repairs, and on a Samsung dryer with a sound drum they generally make sense. Get the vent cleaned at the same time, or the new heating parts will be fighting the same restriction.
