Counted from our technicians' notes on 66 Maytag dryer service calls.
Loads coming out damp
Maytag dryers with Advanced Moisture Sensing end the cycle based on how dry the load reads. Anything that slows airflow throws that reading off. The usual culprit is a lint-packed screen, a crushed vent or a long vent run. With good airflow and loads still damp, look next at a weak heating element on electric models, or the igniter or gas valve coils on gas models.
No heat at all
A blown thermal fuse cuts the heat, and on many electric dryers it shuts the whole dryer down. These fuses blow from overheating, so a blown one is a strong hint that the vent is restricted. Replace the fuse without fixing the vent and it'll probably blow again.
Thumping, squealing, or a drum that won't turn
Worn drum rollers make a thump or rumble, and a squeal comes from the idler pulley. When the motor runs but the drum doesn't, the drive belt has most likely broken.
Still tumbling after it's done
That's Wrinkle Prevent doing its job. It can tumble the load every so often for up to 150 minutes after drying ends. Nothing is wrong.
Codes on the Maytag display
Codes vary by model. Maytag lists these for its electronic dryers.
| Code | What it usually means |
|---|
| AF or F4 E3 | Something is choking the airflow, like a vent run that's too long, kinked, crushed or full of lint, or a dirty lint screen |
| L2 | The dryer is getting too little line voltage, or none, so the heater may not come on. It shows up mostly at installation |
| PF | The power went out mid-cycle |
| F# E# (alternating) | A fault the control has flagged for service |
What to look at before you call us
- Clean the lint screen. Pet Pro loads in particular send a lot of hair its way.
- Pull the dryer out and straighten any vent that's crushed or kinked.
- With the dryer running, go outside and make sure the hood flap opens and the air comes out strong.
- An electric dryer needs a 240-volt supply, so check that both breakers are on.
Long vent runs and Upper Midwest winters
Plenty of Minnesota and Wisconsin homes have long vent runs through cold walls and attics, and lint piles up fastest in the spots you can't see. When your Maytag dryer starts needing extra time or shows AF, get the entire run cleaned, not just the first few feet.
Motor and drum coverage
Maytag's 10-year limited parts warranty includes the drive motor and dryer drum on dryers made after 2017. Coverage differs from one model and purchase year to the next, so your own paperwork has the final say.
Look for the model tag at the upper left of the cabinet back, inside the door, or on the back frame once the door is open. Gas models can also have it behind the access panel.
