Counted from our technicians' notes on 23 Maytag refrigerator service calls.
Fresh-food side warm, freezer fine
That pattern usually comes down to airflow from the freezer. A failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat or sensor lets frost choke the evaporator. An evaporator fan that has stopped, or one that's hitting ice and buzzing, has the same effect. A damper stuck closed keeps cold air out of the fresh-food section entirely. Some Maytag side-by-side and French door models use Advanced Defrost, which defrosts only when needed, so a sensor or control fault there can look exactly the same.
Both sections warm is a bigger deal. The compressor, its start components or the sealed system may be involved, and that's technician-only work.
The ice maker quit
No ice traces back to the water supply most of the time. It can also be a filter that's overdue or not locked in, or a freezer warmer than 0 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit. There's an odd one too. Leave the ice maker on without a water line hooked up and the crispers or freezer can end up too cold, with a buzzing noise to go with it.
Settings and quick fixes to try
- Aim for 0 degrees Fahrenheit in the freezer and 37 in the fresh-food section. Every adjustment needs 24 hours to settle before you judge it.
- Make sure it isn't in Showroom or Demo mode, which keeps the lights on with cooling turned off.
- Leave space between containers so nothing blocks the vents.
- Replace the water filter if it's more than about six months old.
- On models that have PowerCold, use it for fast recovery after the door's been left open.
Check this first after a storm
After an outage or a surge, certain Maytag refrigerators stay off until someone restarts them, and they flag it with a Power Outage alert. In Southwest Florida, that's the first thing to look at after a storm, and when you open up a seasonal home.
Why Maytag says no to most garages
Maytag rates its refrigerators for 55 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit and doesn't recommend a garage unless it's insulated and climate-controlled. In a cold Minnesota or Wisconsin garage, compressor cycling can get thrown off and the freezer can partly thaw.
Compressor coverage and the model tag
On refrigerators made after 2017, Maytag's 10-year limited parts warranty covers the compressor. Your warranty sheet or receipt will show exactly what's covered on your model. The model tag sits on the liner above the crisper drawer on some models, and high in the fresh-food compartment on others, either on the left side or at the front.
