Counted from our technicians' notes on 122 Whirlpool refrigerator service calls.
Freezer's cold, but the fresh-food side is warm
All the cold air in a Whirlpool refrigerator is made at the evaporator, which sits behind the freezer wall. A fan and an air damper push part of that air over to the fresh-food side. So when the refrigerator section warms up and the freezer doesn't, we look at four things. The defrost system may have quit, letting frost choke off airflow through the evaporator. The evaporator fan may have failed or frozen in. The damper could be stuck closed. Or a bad thermistor is feeding the control board the wrong temperature. Thick frost on the back freezer wall, or a fan that buzzes or has gone quiet, points toward defrost.
No ice in the bucket
Most ice complaints turn out to be water supply problems. The valve might be closed or only partly open, the line behind the fridge could be kinked, or the filter may be clogged. The ice maker also won't cycle unless the freezer sits between 0 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit. With good water and a cold freezer, the water inlet valve or the ice maker itself is next on the list.
When neither side is cold
Both compartments warm means the technician checks the condenser fan and the compressor circuit. Anything in the sealed system, including the compressor and refrigerant, is not a homeowner repair.
Five minutes of checking that can save a visit
- Check the temperature settings. Make one small change, then leave it alone for 24 hours before judging the result.
- Clean the condenser area with a soft vacuum brush. Pull the plug first, and the base grille has to come off to reach it.
- Move any food that's blocking the air vents, and make sure the doors close and seal all the way.
- For ice trouble, confirm the supply valve is wide open and the line isn't pinched behind the unit.
- Swap the water filter if it's more than six months old, and check that it locks in.
Second fridges in garages and seasonal homes
Whirlpool rates its refrigerators for 55 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. A second fridge in an unheated Minnesota garage can lose its grip on the fresh-food side during deep cold. Shut one in a Southwest Florida garage over the summer and it works harder and runs longer. A unit that seems fine in spring and fall but struggles in January or August may be telling you its location is part of the problem.
Reading the tag before you call
Side-by-sides carry the tag on the right wall of the fresh-food side. Every other style, from top-freezer and bottom-freezer to French door, has it on the left wall in the fresh-food section.
