What we fix most on Whirlpool ranges

  1. Bake or broil igniter
  2. Surface burner or spark switch
  3. Control board
  4. Temperature sensor
  5. Bake or broil element
  6. Gas valve or regulator

Counted from our technicians' notes on 30 Whirlpool range service calls.

Gas oven slow to heat, or not heating

Whirlpool gas ranges light the bake and broil burners with a hot-surface igniter. As that igniter weakens, the oven takes longer and longer to light, and eventually it won't light at all. Replacing the igniter, a gas valve or a regulator is technician work, not a DIY job.

Electric oven stays cold

Look at the bake element. One that has burned through will show a blister or a break you can see. When the elements look fine, the trouble may be the temperature sensor, the wiring or the control board.

Burners that click and won't catch

Most of the time it's something simple. A burner cap isn't sitting flat on its base, a cap got put on the wrong burner, the burner ports are wet or clogged, or water got into the knob switches during cleaning. After a power outage, some models also lock the cooktop and show Locked until you hold the lock key for three seconds. When none of that is it, the spark switch, spark module or igniter needs checking.

Oven running hot, cold, or showing an F code

An oven that runs off temperature, or throws an F3 code, typically traces back to the temperature sensor or its wiring, and now and then the control. Range codes vary a lot from model to model. The ones below are confirmed on Whirlpool's own support pages.

CodeWhat it usually means
F3 E0A fault in the oven temperature sensor, its wiring, or the control board it reports to
F3 E2Trouble with the oven temperature sensor (or the warming drawer sensor, if there is one) or its wiring
F9-1Door lock switch, the latch itself or related wiring, frequently noticed around self-clean

For any of the three, cut power at the breaker for a full minute. Once it's back on, give the oven another minute and see if the code reappears. A code that comes back means the part needs testing.

Cooktop checks worth doing first

  • Reseat each burner cap so the pins line up and it sits flush.
  • Give wet burners and knob switches time to dry. A hair dryer on cool speeds that up.
  • Use a straight pin, not a toothpick, on plugged ports, and be careful not to widen them.
  • Check for a tripped breaker, and look for Locked on the display.

The model tag is on the oven frame or the storage drawer frame. Open either one and look.

Customer stated oven racks hard to pull out. Found case lip protruding and adjusted. Racks slide properly now.

“I was impressed. M & H Appliance locally here, where I bought my Whirlpool Range, made the excuse that those ranges are known to have the problem I had where the racks were hard to slide in and out and so it was end of story with them. I knew two other people with Whirlpool ranges and their racks slid easily in their ovens. So I contacted the manufacturer directly who put me in contact with Omega Force Appliance. Brandon could see the problem right away and with a simple adjustment on the flange that encased the opening, problem resolved!”

Whirlpool range repair FAQ

What goes wrong most often on Whirlpool ranges?

In our technicians' notes on 30 Whirlpool range service calls, the repairs that come up most involve the bake or broil igniter, surface burner or spark switch and control board. The list near the top of this page shows the rest.

How many Whirlpool ranges have you repaired?

30 Whirlpool range repairs are in our service records so far, and customers rated those visits 5.0 out of 5 stars.

Why does my Whirlpool stove keep clicking?

When it clicks even though every knob is off, water has probably gotten into the knob switches after a spill or a wipe-down. Time fixes that. To hurry it along, take the knobs off and point a hair dryer, set to cool, at the bare shafts. Clicking without lighting is a different problem, and the cause tends to be a burner cap that isn't flat or is sitting on the wrong burner. Still happening once everything is dry and seated? The spark switch or module needs a look.

What does F3 E0 mean on a Whirlpool oven?

Whirlpool points to three possible culprits, which are the wiring, the oven temperature sensor and the control. Try a power reset first. Leave the range breaker off for one minute, then switch it on and keep an eye on the oven for a minute more. A code that comes back means the sensor and its wiring need testing. The sensor is the most common fix, but not the only one.

Why won't my Whirlpool burners light after a power outage?

After an outage, or after the range has been unplugged, some Whirlpool models lock the cooktop and show Locked. Press the lock key and keep holding for about three seconds, until its indicator light turns off. On a brand-new range, light one burner briefly at first so air can purge out of the gas line. Burners that still won't light need service.

Where is the model number on a Whirlpool stove?

Open the oven door and check the frame, or pull the storage drawer all the way out and look on the frame behind it. Write down both the model and serial numbers or snap a photo. The model number decides which igniter, element, sensor or control board fits your range.

How much does Whirlpool range repair cost?

The trip and diagnostic fee starts at $129. Your technician quotes the repair upfront using the Appliance Blue Book, before any work begins, so you can decide with no surprises.

Are you a factory-authorized Whirlpool service provider?

Yes. Omega Force Appliance Repair is a factory-authorized Whirlpool service provider.

Is the repair guaranteed?

Repairs you pay us for directly come with a 10-year warranty on parts and a 60-day labor warranty. When a manufacturer, home warranty company or other third party pays for the repair, that company's warranty applies instead.

Omega Force Appliance Repair is a factory-authorized Whirlpool service provider.
