GE's first checks are basic. Turn the knob to Lite and wait for a flame before you adjust it. Make sure each burner cap matches the size of its burner and sits flat. When no igniter clicks at all but the oven still works, the ignition circuit needs service.
Clicking that won't quit is the opposite problem. Start by making sure the knob is all the way off and has popped back out. A cooktop that's still wet from cleaning will set the igniters clicking too, and that stops once the cooktop dries, which can take a few hours. Constant clicking after it's dry points to the ignition switch or the wiring.
On a gas oven, the bake igniter is the most common cause. A weak one can glow without ever getting hot enough to open the safety valve, so the oven stays cold or heats slowly.
Electric ovens are a different story. With power off at the breaker, look over the lower bake element for cracks or blisters. Elements can also fail with no visible damage at all. After that, the temperature sensor and the control board are the next suspects.
A dead surface element on a coil cooktop is easy to narrow down. Swap the element into another socket that takes the same size. If it heats there, the problem is the original socket or the control switch for that spot. When it stays cold, the element is bad.
GE uses one family of codes across its ranges and wall ovens, and says no list covers every model.
| Code | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| F0, F1, F6, F7 | Most likely a keypanel (touchpad) problem. |
| F2 or F20 | The oven got hotter than the control's cutoff point. |
| F3, F4 | The oven temperature sensor has probably failed. |
| F5, F8, FF | Points to the main oven control board, which is generally the part that gets swapped. |
| F9, FC | A part in the door lock circuit has failed. |
| FD | Trouble with the meat probe or the jack it plugs into, and one of the two is due for replacement. |
| LOC | Control lockout is turned on. Not a fault. |
| ERR | Someone made an invalid entry on the oven controls. |
| OFF | Self-clean can't start yet because the oven is still hot, maybe from a clean that just finished. |
Killing the breaker for a minute or two will sometimes clear an F code. If it comes back, GE wants the oven kept switched off at the breaker until a tech has seen it. You can flip the power on briefly to use the cooktop.
Open the oven door and check the front frame first. Then try inside the storage drawer, under the cooktop on lift-top models, or under the left front element on coil models. Some gas models have a fold-up metal tag tucked behind the back control panel.

“I had explained the issue with my range over the phone to the best of my ability but fully expected the tech would come out and look at the range first and order the parts needed and then come back a later date to fix it. Instead the tech came with the parts needed and just dug right in and fixed everything in record time. He was on time and incredibly nice and knew exactly what to do to fix the range. In our technicians' notes on 64 GE range service calls, the repairs that come up most involve the surface burner or spark switch, bake or broil igniter and control board. The list near the top of this page shows the rest.
64 GE range repairs are in our service records so far, and customers rated those visits 5.0 out of 5 stars.
GE ties F3 and F4 to the oven temperature sensor, which usually needs replacing. Flip the breaker off for a minute or two. A code that returns means the sensor and its wiring should be tested, since a control fault can occasionally read the same way.
A weak bake igniter is the most likely cause. It can glow and still not draw enough current, so the safety valve never fully opens and the burner lights late or not at all. Igniters get weaker with age. A technician can measure yours and replace it. Don't ever try adjusting the gas valve or gas lines yourself.
Make sure the knob is completely off and has popped back out. Cleaned the cooktop recently? Moisture can keep the igniters clicking until everything dries, and that can take a few hours. GE also says several igniters clicking when you light just one burner is normal. Clicking that continues once it's dry and switched off means the ignition system should be checked.
GE puts F9 and FC in the door lock circuit group. Typically a component in the motorized lock or its switch has failed. That can leave the door stuck locked or keep self-clean from starting. A breaker reset clears it sometimes. When it keeps coming back, the lock assembly and its wiring need testing.
The trip and diagnostic fee starts at $129. Your technician quotes the repair upfront using the Appliance Blue Book, before any work begins, so you can decide with no surprises.
