The LG lineup and how it breaks
LG builds refrigerators, front-load and top-load washers, gas, electric and heat pump dryers, the SideKick pedestal washer, ranges, dishwashers and microwaves. A handful of LG engineering choices decide how these machines fail and how they get fixed.
Plenty of LG refrigerators run an inverter linear compressor, and on many models LG's warranty covers that compressor longer than the rest of the fridge. Many French-door models also make ice with a separate system that has its own fan and sensors, and each of those parts has its own error code. LG washers turn the drum with a direct-drive motor (a stator and rotor) instead of a belt, and a lot of LG dishwashers use one too. Most LG appliances put up a code when something goes wrong, and connected models can run Smart Diagnosis through the ThinQ app.
Where LG puts the model and serial label
On a refrigerator, look inside the fresh-food section on the side wall. It's usually on the right, though some newer models moved it to the left. On a front-load washer or dryer, swing the door open and look high on the frame around the opening for a silver label. Top-load washers vary more. Check under the lid toward the bottom right, on the back near the top, or at the top of the left side panel. Ranges have it along the left side of the door or drawer opening, behind the control panel, or on double ovens under the lip of the upper oven. For a dishwasher, open the door and look at its side edge.
Small habits that save a service call
- When a front-load washer starts draining slowly, clean the drain pump filter. A clog there is a common reason for OE.
- Empty the dryer lint filter after every load and keep the vent clear. LG dryers flag a restricted vent with d80, d90 or d95.
- Rinse the dishwasher filter every week or two, which is what LG recommends.
- Don't stack food against the air vents inside the refrigerator.
Cold winters up north, storms down south
In Minnesota and western Wisconsin, a laundry area that drops below freezing can freeze an LG washer's hoses and pump, and the washer will show FF. LG also says its refrigerators won't run right in a room colder than about 14°F, so an unheated garage is a bad home for one.
Down in Southwest Florida, storm-season outages can leave an LG appliance showing PF or behaving strangely. Unplugging it for a minute clears a lot of temporary faults. A code that keeps coming back needs a proper diagnosis.
