An LG gas oven that's slow to light, or won't
Most LG gas ovens light with a hot-surface igniter, and it has to get hot enough to open the oven gas valve. Igniters weaken with age. They keep glowing but stop passing enough current, so the oven takes too long to light or never lights at all. The broil burner has a separate igniter. Anything involving the gas valve or regulator is for a technician only.
Cooktop and element trouble
A burner that clicks nonstop
Constant clicking after a spill or a wipe-down generally means moisture on a spark switch or electrode. Let the cooktop dry completely and check that each burner cap sits flat. One burner that still clicks after drying probably has a bad spark switch on that knob.
Dead elements and burners stuck on high
A bake or broil element with a blister or split needs replacing. A radiant or coil burner that won't heat, or stays on high, points to its infinite switch in most cases.
F-codes and wrong temperatures
F1 or F2 means a look at the oven temperature sensor. F9 says the oven isn't heating the way it should, and that can be an element, an igniter or the control. F3 and unresponsive keys point to the touch pad or control board.
LG range and oven codes
| Code | What it usually means |
|---|
| F1, F2 | Oven temperature sensor (thermistor) problem. On double ovens, F4 and F5 are the lower oven |
| F3 | Touch pad or key problem |
| F9 | Oven not heating properly (F19 on some models) |
| F10 | Oven door lock problem. F20 is the lower oven on double ovens |
| F11 | The control boards aren't communicating |
| F7, F17 | Convection fan problem |
| F27 | Self-clean problem. The cooling fan has stopped or seized |
| PF | Power was interrupted |
| H5 | Not an error. The cooktop surface is still hot |
| Sb, 5b | Not an error. Sabbath mode is on |
Codes vary by model. LG's advice for most of these starts simple. Hit Clear/Off and retry. Still there? Kill power at the breaker, wait 30 seconds and restore it. A code that survives both steps means the part behind it needs testing.
Before you pick up the phone
Smell gas? Skip all of this. Get out of the house and call your gas utility.
- Hit Clear/Off, then restart whatever you were doing.
- Give the range 30 seconds with its breaker off before you flip it back on.
- Make sure Sabbath mode or the control lock isn't on.
- After cleaning, dry the cooktop and reseat the burner caps.
Where the model label hides on an LG range
Check along the left side of the oven door opening or the drawer opening, on the bottom drawer frame, or behind the control panel. On double ovens, open the upper door and look under its lip.
Self-clean is hard on parts
Self-clean runs the oven far hotter than any cooking does. LG even has its own code (F27) for the cooling fan quitting during self-clean, and the door lock codes F10 and F20 tend to show up right after a cleaning cycle. If you use self-clean, run it well ahead of a holiday meal, not the day before.
When an LG range is worth fixing
Igniters, elements, spark switches, infinite switches and sensors are routine LG range repairs. A control board costs more, so make sure the diagnosis is solid before ordering one. A damaged glass cooktop is the repair most likely to push you toward a new range.
