Water under an LG dishwasher

LG dishwashers have a leak sensor in the base, and AE or FE means it found water. Common causes include a worn door gasket, a door that doesn't close square, a tub that isn't level, and suds from hand dish soap or too much detergent. AE with a dry floor still deserves attention. Unplug the dishwasher or turn it off at its power switch and have it checked.

Dirty dishes, standing water and other complaints

Dishes come out dirty

Check the filter first. Then make sure the spray arms turn freely and their holes are open. On QuadWash models, a tall pan can block the extra rotating arms. A dishwasher that hums with weak spray, or shows LE, likely has a circulation pump or wash motor problem.

Water left in the bottom, with OE

Most OE codes come down to a clogged filter or a kinked drain hose. When both check out, the drain pump is next in line.

Won't fill, with IE

Confirm the supply valve under the sink is open. The part that typically fails here is the water inlet valve.

Blank panel or strange behavior

Shut the breaker off for 30 seconds. A panel that stays dark or keeps acting up may need the control board tested.

LG dishwasher codes decoded

CodeWhat it usually means
AE, FELeak or overfill detected. Look for oversudsing, too much water, an unlevel unit or a misaligned door
IENot filling. Water supply, supply valve or inlet valve
OENot draining. Clogged filter, kinked drain hose or drain pump
LEWash (circulation) motor problem
HEWater isn't heating, so check the heater circuit
tETemperature sensor problem
bEToo many suds, typically from the wrong detergent
nEVario (spray diverter) motor problem
PEWater level sensor problem (some older models)
CLNot an error. Control lock is on

Meanings shift from model to model, and a code points to an area, not a specific failed part. Write it down before you reset anything.

Cleaning the filter and other quick checks

Wait about 30 minutes after a cycle so the tub isn't hot, and take the lower rack out. The filter comes free with a counterclockwise twist of its handle. Separate the two pieces, rinse them under the tap, drop them back in, and turn the handle clockwise until you hear a click. While the door's open, note the model label on the right side edge of the door.

  • Straighten the drain hose. LG says it should rise at least 12 inches above the floor.
  • Use only dishwasher detergent. Hand dish soap doesn't belong in there.
  • Level the dishwasher so the door closes evenly.

Hard water in the Twin Cities and Southwest Florida

Much of both areas has hard water. Over time, scale on the spray arm holes and the filter screen chips away at wash performance. Keep the rinse aid topped up and look at the arms whenever you clean the filter.

Coverage and the repairs that pay off

On at least some models, LG's warranty covers the direct-drive motor longer than the rest of the dishwasher, with extended coverage on the control board and racks and on the stainless tub and door liner too. The paperwork that came with yours spells out what's still covered. On an LG with a sound tub, pumps, valves, gaskets and spray arms are reasonable repairs.

LG dishwasher repair FAQ

What goes wrong most often on LG dishwashers?

In our technicians' notes on 71 LG dishwasher service calls, the repairs that come up most involve the leak or door gasket, circulation pump or motor and control board. The list near the top of this page shows the rest.

How many LG dishwashers have you repaired?

71 LG dishwasher repairs are in our service records so far, and customers rated those visits 4.9 out of 5 stars.

What does AE mean on an LG dishwasher?

The leak sensor in the base found water. LG lists oversudsing from hand dish soap or too much detergent, excess water, an unlevel unit and a misaligned door as the common causes. Check the floor and the door seal, stick to dishwasher detergent, and level the unit. A dry floor with AE still on the display is a different case. LG says to pull the plug and schedule a repair.

How often do you clean an LG dishwasher filter?

LG suggests doing it every week or two. Wait roughly 30 minutes after a cycle ends so things cool down, and get the lower rack out of the way. A counterclockwise turn of the handle frees the filter. The inner filter and the stainless one come apart, and both get a rinse under the tap. Fit them together, seat them, and turn clockwise until it clicks. Skipping this leads to OE codes and dirty dishes.

Why are my dishes still wet in my LG dishwasher?

Start with the rinse aid dispenser. When it runs dry, water beads up on dishes, plastics especially. Unloading the bottom rack first keeps the top rack from dripping onto it. Dishes that also come out cool, along with an HE code, mean the water isn't heating and the heater circuit needs service. On models with an auto-open door or heat-dry fan, F31, F35 or F37 point to those systems.

What should I do about an OE code on my LG dishwasher?

OE is LG's drain (outlet) error. Turn off the water supply, check that the drain hose behind the dishwasher isn't kinked or crushed, and clean the filter. LG notes the hose end should sit at least 12 inches above the floor. Was the dishwasher just installed alongside a new garbage disposal? The disposal's knockout plug may never have been removed.

How much does LG dishwasher repair cost?

The trip and diagnostic fee starts at $129. Your technician quotes the repair upfront using the Appliance Blue Book, before any work begins, so you can decide with no surprises.

Are you a factory-authorized LG service provider?

Yes. Omega Force Appliance Repair is a factory-authorized LG service provider.

Is the repair guaranteed?

Repairs you pay us for directly come with a 10-year warranty on parts and a 60-day labor warranty. When a manufacturer, home warranty company or other third party pays for the repair, that company's warranty applies instead.

Omega Force Appliance Repair is a factory-authorized LG service provider.
