Leaks, standing water and the other Bosch dishwasher headaches

Water on the floor, or a machine that quits and shows E15, leads back to the float switch in the base tray. When water reaches it, the dishwasher shuts off the fill and runs the drain pump. The water tends to come from a worn door gasket, a cracked sump or hose, or a loose connection. A slow drip from the door seal can stain the floor and never trip the float at all.

Standing water after a cycle points to a clogged filter, a blocked drain pump or a problem with the drain hose. On a brand new install, the classic culprit is a knockout plug still sitting in the garbage disposal inlet. A machine that won't fill, or fills slowly, may have a kinked supply line, a closed valve under the sink or a failed water inlet valve.

Cold or dirty dishes are a different story. Bosch heats water with a heater built into the circulation pump, not an element in the tub. When that heat pump or the circulation motor starts to go, you get poor cleaning, long cycles or heater codes. A dead display or random behavior is often the control board.

What the Bosch E codes are telling you

CodeWhat it usually means
E15Water in the base tripped the leak sensor. Find and fix the leak before anything else.
E24Not draining properly. Look for a kinked drain hose, a clogged filter or a disposal knockout plug left in place.
E25The drain pump is blocked or its cover is loose, and glass or debris under that cover is a common find
E22Clogged filters
E23Something is wrong with the drain pump
E16, E17, E18A water supply or fill problem. Check the supply valve and inlet hose.
E09Fault with the heater inside the circulation (heat) pump
E12Limescale has built up in the heat pump

Codes and their meanings change from model to model. Newer Bosch machines show four-digit versions of the same faults, so E3100, for example, lines up with E15. And a code tells you where the trouble is, not necessarily which part died.

Five things to try before you book

  1. Kill power at the breaker for 30 seconds, then turn it back on. Bosch recommends this reset for most electronic codes.
  2. Pull the filter from the bottom of the tub, scrub it under running water with a soft brush and lock it back in.
  3. On a drain code, take off the small cover in the sump and look for glass or seeds. Wear gloves, and make sure the cover clicks back into place.
  4. Check that the supply valve under the sink is open all the way and the drain hose isn't kinked behind the machine.
  5. With E15, shut off the water supply and call for service. Water in the base means something is leaking.

Hard water and rinse aid

Rinse the filter any time you notice residue. Keep rinse aid filled even if your detergent contains some. Hard water is common in Minnesota and Wisconsin, so descale every so often if you have it. Models with a built-in softener take dishwasher salt and nothing else.

Is your Bosch worth fixing?

Bosch shares parts across its series, and most failures come down to one pump, valve, gasket or board. Bosch also lists parts-only coverage on electronics and racks into year five, so look at your paperwork before you pay for a board. Replacing makes sense when a leak has damaged the floor or cabinet, or when several parts are going at once.

Bosch dishwasher repair FAQ

What goes wrong most often on Bosch dishwashers?

In our technicians' notes on 113 Bosch dishwasher service calls, the repairs that come up most involve the leak or door gasket, drain pump and filter or clog. The list near the top of this page shows the rest.

How many Bosch dishwashers have you repaired?

113 Bosch dishwasher repairs are in our service records so far, and customers rated those visits 4.9 out of 5 stars.

What does E15 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?

Your leak sensor found water in the base tray under the tub. The dishwasher stops filling and runs the drain pump so your floor doesn't get soaked. Bosch's advice is to turn off the water supply and contact service. Worn door gaskets, cracked hoses or sumps and loose connections are the common causes. Clearing the code without fixing the leak just brings it right back.

Why won't my Bosch dishwasher drain?

Start with the filter, then look for debris under the drain pump cover and a kink in the drain hose. On a new install, check whether anyone removed the knockout plug from the disposal's dishwasher inlet. These problems show up as E22, E24 or E25. When the filter and pump area are clean and water still sits in the tub, the drain pump itself may have failed.

Is it worth repairing a 10 year old Bosch dishwasher?

In a lot of cases, yes. The tub is stainless, and at that age most failures are one part, like a drain pump, inlet valve, door gasket or circulation pump. Bosch uses the same core wash system across its series, so parts are generally available. We'd lean toward replacing it if a leak has damaged the floor or cabinet, or several major parts are failing together.

Does a Bosch dishwasher have a heating element?

Not one you can see. The heater lives inside the circulation pump, which Bosch calls the heat pump. Drying happens by condensation, and some 800 and Benchmark models add CrystalDry, which uses a zeolite mineral. So codes like E09 and E12 send us to the heat pump, not to an element in the bottom of the tub.

Why does my Bosch dishwasher leave dishes wet?

Condensation drying depends on rinse aid to get water sheeting off the dishes. Top it up, use the amount your manual recommends and don't pack things too tightly. Plastic doesn't hold heat and tends to stay damp. Pick a stronger drying option if you have one. Wet glass and ceramic are another matter, and that's worth having checked.

How much does Bosch dishwasher repair cost?

The trip and diagnostic fee starts at $129. Your technician quotes the repair upfront using the Appliance Blue Book, before any work begins, so you can decide with no surprises.

Are you a factory-authorized Bosch service provider?

Yes. Omega Force Appliance Repair is a factory-authorized Bosch service provider.

Is the repair guaranteed?

Repairs you pay us for directly come with a 10-year warranty on parts and a 60-day labor warranty. When a manufacturer, home warranty company or other third party pays for the repair, that company's warranty applies instead.

Omega Force Appliance Repair is a factory-authorized Bosch service provider.
