What we fix most on KitchenAid refrigerators

  1. Ice maker
  2. Defrost system (heater, thermostat, sensor)
  3. Control board
  4. Compressor or sealed system
  5. Evaporator fan motor
  6. Condenser fan motor

Counted from our technicians' notes on 38 KitchenAid refrigerator service calls.

When the fridge side warms up but the freezer doesn't

That's a defrost problem more often than not. When the defrost heater, thermostat or sensor fails, frost builds up on the evaporator and chokes off the airflow. A dead evaporator fan motor gives you the exact same symptom. If everything is warming and the compressor never seems to shut off, look at dirty condenser coils, a failing control board or a sealed-system problem.

Ice trouble has its own set of causes. No ice, or cubes that come out small and hollow, can trace back to a closed or kinked water line, a clogged or badly seated water filter, a freezer set too warm, or a failed ice maker or water valve. Water pooling under the crispers or on the floor means a clogged defrost drain or a leaking water valve or line.

Preserva models have two cooling systems

A lot of KitchenAid French door and side-by-side refrigerators were built with the Preserva food care system. It cools the fresh-food and freezer sections with two separate evaporators so freezer air and refrigerator air never mix. The catch for repair is that there are two sets of cooling parts. A warm fresh-food section on one of these has to be traced to the right evaporator, fan and defrost circuit.

Quick checks you can do yourself

  1. Look at the settings. KitchenAid recommends about 0°F in the freezer and 33 to 40°F in the fresh-food section, and the cabinet needs around 24 hours to settle after you change anything.
  2. For ice problems, make sure the ice maker is on, the supply valve is all the way open, and the line behind the fridge isn't pinched against the wall.
  3. Just changed the water filter and now ice is slow? It may not be seated. Water that still flows from the dispenser with the filter removed confirms it, so put it back in firmly.
  4. Reset the ice maker with its reset button if it has one, or unplug the refrigerator for a minute.

Give a new ice maker some time. Filling the bin the first time can take as long as three days, and after that a fresh batch should drop about every three hours.

Have the model number from the tag when you call. Top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French door and four-door models have it on the left wall inside the fresh-food compartment, and side-by-sides have it on the right wall of the fresh-food side.

Closing up a Southwest Florida house for summer

If you shut the water off before you leave, turn the ice maker off too. Running it dry is a problem, according to KitchenAid. The freezer and the fresh-food section can both get too cold, and you may hear it buzzing. When you get back, toss the first bins of ice and change the filter if it's due.

Which repairs make sense

Ice makers, valves, fans, defrost parts and control boards are routine repairs. A sealed-system repair on an older unit is where it's worth taking a hard look at replacement.

KitchenAid refrigerator repair FAQ

What goes wrong most often on KitchenAid refrigerators?

In our technicians' notes on 38 KitchenAid refrigerator service calls, the repairs that come up most involve the ice maker, defrost system (heater, thermostat, sensor) and control board. The list near the top of this page shows the rest.

How many KitchenAid refrigerators have you repaired?

38 KitchenAid refrigerator repairs are in our service records so far, and customers rated those visits 5.0 out of 5 stars.

Why is my KitchenAid fridge not cooling but the freezer is cold?

The fresh-food side gets its cold air from an evaporator coil, and that coil has to defrost on a regular schedule. When the defrost heater, thermostat or sensor fails, frost blocks the airflow and the fresh-food section warms up. A failed evaporator fan does the same thing. On dual-evaporator KitchenAid models, the fresh-food side has its own cooling circuit that needs checking too.

Why is my KitchenAid ice maker not making ice?

Go through the basics first. The ice maker switch should be on, the supply valve fully open, the line behind the fridge free of kinks, and the freezer close to 0 degrees. A new or poorly seated water filter is a common reason for slow or no ice. When all of that checks out, the ice maker itself or the water inlet valve may have failed.

How long does a KitchenAid refrigerator water filter last?

Swap it when the indicator light comes on or about six months after the last one went in. That's KitchenAid's guideline. With heavy use or poor water quality, change it more often. A clogged filter slows the dispenser and can make small, hollow cubes, so a new filter is a cheap thing to try before paying for an ice maker repair.

How do I reset my KitchenAid ice maker?

It depends on the model, so your manual has the final word. Unplugging the fridge for a minute works on many of them. Others have a reset button you hold for about five seconds, found on or near the ice maker or behind a little panel inside the freezer. On units without a button, pushing the wire bail arm down until it clicks twice may do it.

How much does KitchenAid refrigerator repair cost?

The trip and diagnostic fee starts at $129. Your technician quotes the repair upfront using the Appliance Blue Book, before any work begins, so you can decide with no surprises.

Are you a factory-authorized KitchenAid service provider?

Yes. Omega Force Appliance Repair is a factory-authorized KitchenAid service provider.

Is the repair guaranteed?

Repairs you pay us for directly come with a 10-year warranty on parts and a 60-day labor warranty. When a manufacturer, home warranty company or other third party pays for the repair, that company's warranty applies instead.

Omega Force Appliance Repair is a factory-authorized KitchenAid service provider.
