How Monogram builds its refrigerators

Every Monogram refrigerator is a built-in, made to sit flush with the cabinetry around it. The lineup includes side-by-sides in 36, 42 and 48-inch widths, French-door and bottom-freezer models, and fully integrated columns. Today's built-in side-by-side generally has an ice maker and door dispenser, SmartHQ Wi-Fi, a climate-control drawer, and a water filter mounted up in the overhead cabinet. The sealed system is the familiar setup of compressor, condenser, evaporator and the tubing that connects them.

Warm, silent or out of ice

Is the fridge silent? It may just be defrosting, and a defrost cycle can stop the compressor for roughly 30 minutes. Past that, make sure the controls aren't set to off and the breaker hasn't tripped. When it stays off anyway, the control board, a compressor start component or the compressor itself may be the problem.

A compartment running too warm can come from hot weather, lots of door openings, a package propping a door open, or controls set too warm. Beyond those, we'd look at a failing evaporator fan, a defrost component, a condenser airflow problem or a sealed-system fault.

An ice maker that quits may be switched off, have its water supply off or kinked, or have cubes piled against the shut-off. A freezer that's too warm stops it as well. Odd-sized or clumped ice is its own thing, and Monogram says an ice maker that isn't level will make irregular cubes that bridge together.

A water dispenser that won't work comes down to a clogged filter, the dispenser lock being on, a problem with the supply line, or air trapped in the line after you change the filter. When moisture shows up on the cabinet between the doors, that's humidity, and Monogram recommends air conditioning to control it.

Reading the Monogram display

Monogram's built-in side-by-side manual lists no owner fault codes, but a few display states are good to know. OFF on both temperature displays means cooling has been turned off. SA flashes up for a moment when you set Sabbath mode. The filter light goes orange when a replacement is coming due and red when it's time to swap it.

Quick things to rule out

  • Check the breaker and look at the temperature settings.
  • See that nothing in the bins or door shelves is keeping a door from closing.
  • Hold the LOCK pad for three seconds to unlock the dispenser. After a filter change, press and hold the dispenser arm for two minutes or more to push the air out.
  • A red light or slow flow means it's time for a new water filter.
  • Gurgling, clicking dampers and dripping during defrost are all normal sounds.

The label under the climate-control drawer

Built-in side-by-side models have the model and serial label low on the right side of the fresh food compartment, below the climate-control drawer. If you have a different style, the installation instructions for your model show where the rating label is.

Leaving a Naples home for the season

For any absence, Monogram tells owners to switch the ice maker off and close the water supply valve. That way a slow leak behind the cabinets can't do damage in a closed-up Naples or Bonita Springs home. For a long absence, empty the refrigerator, turn the controls off and leave the doors propped open. And when a hurricane-season outage hits while you're home, keep the doors shut. Under US food safety guidance, food stays safe for about four hours in a closed refrigerator and about 48 hours in a full freezer.

Is a sealed-system repair worth it?

The sealed system gets longer warranty coverage from Monogram than the rest of the refrigerator does, and the later years are parts only. So fixing a compressor or sealed system on a mid-life built-in can cost much less than you'd first expect. Any replacement also has to fit your cabinet opening and the anti-tip mounting. Repair is usually the smarter choice unless the liner or cabinet is damaged or several major systems are failing.

Model ZISB36DCA

GE monogram built in refrigerator customer stated was not cooling well and could hear a grinding like sound coming from top of freezer. Compressor cycled off upon arrival and refrigerator at 36 degrees. Left doors open to cycle compressor on. Has a serviced fitting. Checked evaporator coil for any ice build up. No ice build up found and evaporator fan motor running as normal. Unable to recreate no cooling issue. Added small amount of refrigerant to see if this will prevent issue from returning. Suspect there may have been some ice build up on the coil that was making contact with evaporator fan motor causing the sound and fresh foods section not cooling well issues. Advised customer to continue to monitor and to call back if issue returns

Monogram refrigerator repair FAQ

How many Monogram refrigerators have you repaired?

5 Monogram refrigerator repairs are in our service records so far, and customers rated those visits 5.0 out of 5 stars.

Why is my Monogram refrigerator not cooling but the light is on?

Start with the simple causes Monogram lists. The controls may be set too warm or turned off, a package may be holding a door open, or a defrost cycle may have paused the compressor for about 30 minutes. If it's still warm after that, common causes include restricted condenser airflow, a defrost fault or a failed evaporator fan, and each needs a technician to diagnose.

How often should I change my Monogram refrigerator water filter?

Monogram's built-in manual goes by the filter indicator, not a calendar. Orange means a replacement is coming up and red means replace it now. Change it earlier if the dispenser or ice maker starts getting less water. Retailer specs rate the filter for about one year of service. Also worth knowing, Monogram's warranty excludes damage caused by filters that aren't from GE Appliances.

Why are my Monogram ice cubes small or stuck together?

An ice maker that isn't level makes irregular cubes and bridging, according to Monogram. Small or hollow cubes can also come from a clogged filter, weak water pressure or a supply valve that's only partly open. It needs cold water at 40 to 120 psi. Leveled it and changed the filter with no luck? Have the fill valve checked.

Does the Monogram warranty cover the compressor?

It does, and for longer than the rest of the fridge. The sealed refrigeration system, meaning the compressor, condenser, evaporator and tubing, gets extended coverage, with parts only in the later years. Coverage differs from one model and purchase year to the next, so your own paperwork has the final say. If you think your unit is still covered, call Monogram.

How much does Monogram refrigerator repair cost?

The trip and diagnostic fee starts at $129. Your technician quotes the repair upfront using the Appliance Blue Book, before any work begins, so you can decide with no surprises.

Are you a factory-authorized Monogram service provider?

Yes. Omega Force Appliance Repair is a factory-authorized Monogram service provider.

Is the repair guaranteed?

Repairs you pay us for directly come with a 10-year warranty on parts and a 60-day labor warranty. When a manufacturer, home warranty company or other third party pays for the repair, that company's warranty applies instead.
