When the lid or door won't lock
Most Maytag top-load HE washers lock the lid before they agitate or spin, and the front-loaders lock the door. LdL means the lid won't lock, and detergent buildup or a stray item can be behind it. LdU means it won't unlock, which frequently comes down to something sitting on top of the lid. Rule both out and you're looking at the lock assembly or the lid switch.
Weak agitation, or no spin
Belt-driven models can wear out or snap the drive belt, so the motor runs while the basket barely moves. Direct-drive models track motor speed through a sensor. When the control can't confirm the speed, a front-loader shows F7 E1, and the motor, its sensor or the wiring needs testing.
Drain and fill trouble
A drn or F9 E1 code means draining is taking too long. Look for a kinked drain hose before you blame the drain pump. LF or F8 E1 sends you to the water supply first, meaning the faucets, hoses and inlet screens, and then to the inlet valve.
The full Maytag code list
Maytag publishes these codes for its top-load HE and front-load washers. They vary by model, and older agitator washers may not show any.
| Code | What it usually means |
|---|
| LdL | The top-load lid isn't locking |
| LdU | The top-load lid can't unlock |
| F5 E2 | The front-load door isn't locking properly |
| LF, Lo FL or F8 E1 | Filling is taking too long, most likely a water supply problem |
| drn or F9 E1 | Not draining properly. On front-loaders, draining has run past about 8 minutes |
| F7 E1 | Front-load motor speed sensing error |
| OL | Top-load load is too large, so the washer drains and stops |
| Ofb | The load is out of balance |
| HC | The hot and cold inlet hoses are swapped |
| Sud | Too many suds |
Worth a try before we come out
- Take anything off the lid and wipe detergent residue from around the lid lock.
- Open both faucets fully and check that the hoses are on the correct inlets.
- Break up oversized loads. Deep Fill and Extra Power help with tough loads, but they don't make room for more clothes.
- Unplug the washer for a minute to reset it.
Is the motor still under warranty?
On models made after 2017, Maytag's 10-year limited parts warranty includes the drive motor and wash basket. Pull out the warranty sheet for your model, since coverage isn't the same across the whole line. After the first year, labor on those parts is generally on you.
The model tag sits inside the lid at the bottom right corner, on the back behind the control panel, or on the back of the base frame.
