A German company that sticks to cold

Liebherr is a family-run German company. It built its first refrigerator in 1954 and still makes refrigerators and freezers in Ochsenhausen, in southern Germany. Its home appliance range centers on cold storage, meaning refrigerators, freezers and wine cabinets. That's why a Liebherr so often sits next to another brand's cooking equipment.

What Liebherr sells for the home

• Built-in refrigerators and fridge-freezers come in bottom-freezer and side-by-side layouts, and many are panel-ready.
• Monolith columns are separate refrigerator, freezer and wine columns that sit side by side in custom cabinetry, with touch-and-swipe displays and Wi-Fi.

DuoCooling, BioFresh and the other names on the spec sheet

Liebherr fridge-freezers use DuoCooling, which means two independent cooling circuits and no air moving between the refrigerator and the freezer. Odors don't cross over, and food dries out more slowly. It also means trouble in one compartment doesn't always involve the other.

BioFresh drawers hold produce, meat and dairy just above freezing. You can adjust the BioFresh temperature, but the coldest settings can freeze delicate food. NoFrost takes care of freezer defrosting automatically, and models without it need a manual defrost now and then. SuperCool and SuperFrost are temporary boost modes for a big grocery haul, and they switch themselves off.

The wine cabinets have their own set of features. Liebherr fits them with replaceable activated charcoal filters, UV-blocking insulated glass and low-vibration compressors. On many models the dual zones adjust anywhere from 41°F to 68°F, and there are door and temperature alarms.

Reading the Liebherr serial plate

On most Liebherr appliances, the serial plate is inside, low on the left side. A drawer or shelf can block the view, so pull one out if you need to. Monolith models have it behind the first drawer, and some wine cabinets put it under the bottle shelf. The plate shows the model name with an index number, a service number and a nine-digit serial number. Have all three handy, because the index number tells apart different versions of the same model.

How far the Liebherr warranty goes

Liebherr's US residential warranty lists two years of full coverage on the whole appliance and five years of full coverage on the sealed system. From year six through year twelve, the sealed system is covered for parts only. It only applies to appliances bought for, and set up in, the US or Canada. What's covered on yours depends on the model and the date you bought it. Liebherr also asks owners to register the product.

A few habits for Liebherr owners

Keep the ventilation slots and grilles clear, since built-in units rely on them to carry heat out of the cabinetry. Swap the wine cabinet's charcoal filter on the schedule your manual gives. And if the display says DemoMode, the unit won't cool. Hold the DemoMode button for 3 seconds within 5 minutes of powering up to cancel it.

Protecting a wine collection through storm season

In Naples, Marco Island and Bonita Springs homes with a Liebherr wine column, a long outage puts the wine at risk along with the food. Keep the doors closed while the power's out. A closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours, and a full freezer for about 48. The Red Cross also recommends unplugging appliances during an outage, so a surge doesn't hit them when power returns.

Seasonal owners can use Liebherr's HolidayMode once the fridge section has been emptied. It raises the fridge to 59°F to save energy while you're away and leaves the freezer setting alone. Turn off the ice maker and its water supply as well.
