Why Miele owners fix instead of replace

Carl Miele and Reinhard Zinkann founded Miele in 1899, and their direct descendants still own it. The company is based in Gütersloh, Germany. Its testing standard for home appliances goes as far as 20 years of use. People buy one expecting it to last, and that's why most repairs are worth doing.

What Miele sells in the US

The lineup covers most of the house. Dishwashers come in the G 5000 and G 7000 series, in 24 inch and 18 inch widths, fully integrated panel-ready models included. They offer AutoDos detergent dispensing with PowerDisk cartridges, AutoOpen drying, the 3D MultiFlex cutlery tray and a Double Waterproof system.

On the laundry side, Miele makes front-loading washers, some with TwinDos automatic dosing, and heat pump dryers that reuse the same air through an evaporator and don't vent outside. For cooking there are wall ovens, combi-steam ovens, cooktops and ranges. Miele also makes refrigeration, plus built-in and countertop coffee machines.

A machine that tells you what's wrong

Miele appliances are heavily electronic and keep an eye on themselves. They don't fail silently. They stop and show a fault number or a plain-language message. Plenty of those messages point to something you can clear yourself, like a closed water supply, a dirty filter or a blocked pump. Others are internal faults that need a technician. Reading the fault correctly before ordering parts saves time, since Miele parts are specific to the brand.

The heat pump dryers show how this plays out. There's no outside vent to clean, but there are two filter stages. The lint filters in the door opening need cleaning after every load. The plinth filter behind the lower access panel needs a rinse whenever the dryer asks for one, and it should dry fully before it goes back in. Let them clog and the clean airways indicator comes on, drying slows down and the heat exchanger fins behind the filter can get dirty. Those fins bend easily, and Miele warns that a dryer with damaged fins will not dry.

Coming home to Naples after the off-season

Lots of Miele kitchens in Naples, Marco Island and Bonita Springs sit unused for months in the off-season, which is hard on anything with pumps and seals. Miele notes that a dishwasher's circulation pump can dry out and stick after weeks or months idle, and you'll see F14 or F78 when you get back. Seasonal owners tend to shut the water off before they leave, and a closed supply valve is the first thing Miele lists for water-inlet faults. Before calling us, do this much on your first day back.

• Turn the water supply all the way back on before running any appliance.
• Run a short rinse on the dishwasher and a quick wash on the washer to wet the seals and pumps.
• When a fault shows up, switch the appliance off for a few seconds and restart it once before you book service.

Routine care, machine by machine

Check the dishwasher's filter combination when the display reminds you, which by default is every 50 programs. Keep rinse aid filled. Models with a water softener need dishwasher salt in the reservoir and the softener set to your water hardness. Leave the washer door open between loads so the gasket and drum dry out. On the dryer, clean the lint filters every load and rinse the plinth filter when it prompts you.

Two years from Miele, longer with a plan

Miele's US warranty page lists a two-year warranty from the purchase date on household appliances, and extended plans go up to 10 years. What's covered on yours depends on the model and the date you bought it.
